Netflix Party vs Scener

So we had a watch along for The Umbrella Academy Season 2 on the Confab Discord server and as I was the one silly enough to bring it up, I ended up being the one coordinating it. Here's what I learned.

Netflix Party is easy to set up. You need to be on a computer/laptop - PC, Mac or Chromebook as you have to access Netflix on Google Chrome and have Netflix Party extension installed. It went great and we very much enjoyed squeeing together watching the show. There's just something about sharing fandom live with fangirls.

That said - I would recommend the Scener chrome extension over Netflix Party.

Accounts: Netflix Party is plug and play; Scener makes you create an account. This was the main reason I went with NP. It was on the fly, and I wanted to keep the setup bar fairly low. We weren't sure it was going to be worth the trouble. Hopefully, the others enjoyed it as much as I did and we can do more.
Streaming Services: Netflix Party is limited to Netflix. Scener is Netflix, Disney +, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Max, Funimation, and Vimeo. Each party goer has to log into the service on their own and the app then takes control.
1. NP was a little buggy and booted me out of my own party on the second night. Other users had problems joining in mid stream and yet other users got in just fine. *shrugs*
Chat Capabilities: NP has a chat room to the side confined to text. Scener offers vid, voice and text all to your preferences.
Room sizes:: NP doesn't have a limit posted. Scener caps out at 20 connections.

Marvel Credits in Civil War Trailer

I am in the middle of a massive picspam about the Civil War trailer that will likely take me the rest of the weekend so who knows if I'll get to post it. *growls at stupid detached retina*

But the Marvel Logo animation that leads the trailer - WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THE MARVEL LOGO SHOTS???

New iTunes

ARGH. The iTunes Library no longer shows you how many songs/artists/albums or the library size. WOE.

But - the new album view is very pretty. It picks color schemes based on the album cover.

Still - I do not approve of so many changes that I needed the tutorial videos to find the tutorial videos!

THE INTERNET KNOWS ALL.

Go to that little File button - Show Menu Bar. This brings back the File/Edit/View/Etc.
Go to View - Show Sidebar - that brings back the playlist views (although I didn't mind this so much - if you just start dragging something to the right, it came back)
Go to View - Show Status Bar - AND THE SIZE OF YOUR LIBRARY COMES BACK.

For the record? I'm back up to 26,023 Songs, 3552 Albums, 71.2 Days, 140.47GB - or halfway to where I was when the Dead Brain took it all away last time. My Precioussss...

I am once again early voting like last presidential electon. This time with Mom as we are going to Disney this weekend for her bday.

This year's line is a whimp compared to last election, but that may be because we on a weekday. Last time I was here on a Saturday. It helps. We are only going to be a couple of hours. See previous posts about Floridians not letting lines win.

We dropped Rocky off before coming here. The office staff were all happy to see him as he's so mellow and he barely even noticed I was leaving. LOL.

iTunes as Fandom

As previously mentioned, I've run across people who don't use iTunes.

SIGH.

Some Kat Definitions:
Freak: It's totally not your fault. You were born this freak/nurtured into it and cannot change, even though you'd might want to
Geek: Choose to be a freak - you take delight in your freak and will recruit others to your ways. That others can and will be recruited is a point of pride. This is where most of true fangirling occurs.
Nerd: obsessed and non-social, you know the majority does not do it your way/care about it the way you do - you like it because you know society is ROONG LEIK WOAH and you are obviously superior. Unless of course, someone is being a nerd about something you do not care about. Then, they are just unattractive. This is where most of fandom wank begins.

Using iTunes to Make A FanMix - Updated

iTunes has updated - making it harder to have duplicates in your music library. As I just had to rebuild my library (I'm up to 9000 songs... getting there) - this is actually a very, very nice feature as I don't have to worry if I've already added a folder - when I find one I add it and if it's already there, iTunes pets me on the head and ignores me.

But this does mean you have to do a couple of extra steps to make a fanmix show properly in your album list.

Horror 101: The Dilemma of being a Liberal Female and a Horror Fan

Last year I talked about Horror and in the comments some stuff came up. Horror as a genre is FILLED with racism and sexism - really any kind of "diversity is bad" ism there is.

It's been on my mind lately, because we may have a horror genre panel at WinCon this year and I'm trying to work through how to address it. I am very leery of being a white chick and coming across as "Pfft. Horror is racist and sexist. But who cares? YAY GORE!"

Because that is NOT what I believe.

Using Twitter For World Domination Without Getting Blocked as Spam

As we're approaching premiere time again - I notice that Supernatural Fandom keeps trying to use Twitter to promote Show and instead keeps getting its hashtags banned. What surprises me most is how surprised we all get by it! HEE.

I am in NO WAY any kind of authority on Twitter or internet businesses, some or all of this might be wrong. But I did see a few misconceptions during #spn100 that I'd like to clear up.

Misconception #1. Twitter is a social media business and will treat me like a customer.
( Except it's not at all )

Misconception #2. Twitter needs my content to survive and will provide basic support to ensure I keep my content on it.
( I don't think they actually CARE at this point. )

Misconception #3. Twitter takes conscious steps to block certain hash tags.
( Not so much, from what I've seen. )

Misconception #4. If I tweet #spn100 #spn100 #spn100 #spn100 #spn100 #spn100 #spn100 #spn100 - that counts as 8 hits on the search engine and will help a tag trend faster.
( Please stop this )

Secondly - Misconception #5. If a lot of people tweet the same tag at once, it will trend. If it's not, they must be blocking it.
( The only thing I got from Statistics. )

Misconception #6. Attempting to deliberately create a trend to promote the show is not spam.
( OH YES IT IS )

Misconception #7. If we keep using a blocked tag, they will unblock it.
( I don't get this one. )

Misconception #8. OhShitOhShit We're all going to get suspended!
( BREATHE, PEOPLE! )

So How Do We Spam Twitter Without Spamming Twitter?

If we want to use Twitter to promote Show, then we need to start producing content in volume with the tag and not tweet solely about the trends as they occur.

With #spn100, we were doing good until we got all caught up at jumping so fast to the 2 spot. We were tweeting favorite quotes, different parties we were going to, etc. Even Retweeting isn't a bad thing - but I think we need to make sure to add comments - 'me too' - if nothing else. We are most definitely allowed to be excited about the awesome episodes we're getting and are allowed to tweet about them.

The mantra is CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT. As long as we are actually saying something, Twitter has no problem with us. It's very similiar to walking the TWOP Board on Board discussion rule. We can use Twitter, but we can't tweet about using Twitter.

And if we get one more viewer out of it, then it's worth the effort.

And that's MY OPINION on the matter. What's yours?
